Three posts already this year, not bad going. I don’t feel like I’m getting more leisure time than I was, I still feel overwhelmed and unable to cope, but I’ve clearly been able to do a bit of painting and modelling so that’s something. There are so many things I want to do, so many projects and protests and archives and DIY and learning and books to read and hobby ideas but no time to do any of it.

So Waaagh! Nikkaz. Nikkaz obviously has ambition, ten grots is hardly a waagh! These goblin pirate miniatures are lovely, proper oldhammer-esque. I’ve thrown in a few properly oldhammer grots too and another Makari as I seem to have Makaris out the wazzoo! No Ghazghulls, mind, just Makaris. A nice fun little project, and now I’ve only got four more squads left until I’ve painted every squad in Freebooterz.

I’m struggling getting the best use out of contrast yellow. Sometimes it looks great, but here I think it looks dark and unsaturated (is that the right word?)

I don’t have an epic ork army, I just painted this one because it was there. I am not that happy with the outcome. Maybe it’s time to sell up the epic stuff!

I love that the title of the captain of the Seventh Company is Chief Victualler.  I wonder if he goes to the shops himself, or if he just writes the shopping list and sends some of his company to go?  Maybe they get tesco to deliver.  The Steel Guard are a fleet-based chapter with a Star Fortress and a number of Fortress Monastery-Garrisons so it might get a bit complex.  Perhaps he just writes the menus and hangs around the kitchen harassing the kitchen-workers like the manager at restaurant I worked for.  I’d hate to have to do the washing up after a big dinner for over a thousand hungry Space Marines.

So this chap is a Primaris Captain in gravis armour – which I think means that his armour makes him look pregnant!  I am glad that Games Workshop haven’t completely lost their playfulness.

Captain Rioghaine

The snow effect looks a lot better in the photo than it does in person.

Chief Victualler

I hate painting cloaks. Haven’t quite got the power sword effect right yet either.

Need any blood today, missus?

Meet Nigel.  Nigel is a door-to-door blood salesman.  He has been painted for the Oldhammer Forum’s annual painting challenge for 2016 – “Chaos Villagers”.  Nigel has a bestial face mutation, and an extra arm with a beweaponed extremity.  Obviously I used a plastic beastman and glued a tyranid arm onto him!  He’s got a bucket filled with lovely blood and carries a banner advertising his wares.

Quite pleased with this, enjoyed making him.  Won’t leave it so late next year!

Dyb dyb dob… Space Marine Scouts

Finished recently are this squad of Space Marine Scouts for my Steel Guard.  This squad is the first time I’ve ever painted any Scouts, and includes early Advanced Space Crusade plastics, Rogue Trader metals, mid-period metals, and modern plastic kit Scouts.

I am NOT a fan of the modern plastic kits.  It must be admitted that the modern plastics in this squad came from junk lots, and needed extensive repair work just to look like they do.  Perhaps if I had them fresh on the sprue and didn’t have to deal with someone else’s mess, then I might have enjoyed them more.  The old ASC plastics are lovely though, and the metals were all a joy to paint as well.

Without further ado, here they are, presented against a WIP building I might finish one day.

From Deepest Space… Abhuman Space Pirates

The Imperium is a big place.  Lex Imperialis is the theoretical, but perhaps not the practical.  Even in the important systems, on the key planets, there are many places to hide or avoid the gaze of the Inquisition or Adeptus Arbites.  At the edges of the Imperium, where the reach of the Adeptus Terra barely stretches, many worlds are adrift from the Imperium altogether, the loyal worlds compromising on key tenets of Imperial rule, or ignoring them altogether.   Thus it is that despite ten thousand years of homo sapiens chauvinism there are still dozens of thriving strains of abhuman.  How’s a bloke to earn a living in a universe that says his horns are wrong?  The answer, as throughout history, is piracy….

This pack of homo sapiens variatus makes a living as best it can.  Perhaps they’d prefer the term ‘mercenary’ or perhaps ‘buccaneer’.    They are led by Seo Jong, a huge, cunning, and violent giant of a (beast)man – the model is of course one of the recent Space Riders collection.  (As a brief aside, I’d never taken part in a kickstarter before, and so I only dipped my toes in and foolishly just bought the minotaurs).  Jong’s second in command, Soyuz Charlie, rocks a power glove for smashing skulls.  The others have an array of weapons, including a plasma gun, shootas, and their pride and joy, a conversion beamer.  The two dimmest, most inbred beastmen have only axes and primitive shields.  They can’t be trusted with precious modern technology.

Jong’s gang move from world to world at the edges of the Ultima Segmentum, doing security, taking on paid missions wherever someone needs some muscle, or perhaps doing a bit of raiding here and there.  As long as there are no Space Marines or Inquisition involved, of course!

Finished these yesterday, not sure what I think of them.  All three were a rescue mission.  The Attack Bike had previously been stripped and the plastic is kind of bubbly and rough. I think the silver and grey trim isn’t as good as I had hoped.  Still, they are what they are!

Battlemasters Goblins!

Golly, it’s been a while hasn’t it?  Since I last posted I’ve completed a couple of squads but I’ve not been happy enough with them to post pictures.  Here’s the first complete thing in ages that I’ve been relatively happy with.  It’s a tray of Goblins for a Chaos warband.  Not perfect but they’ll do!

Alpha Legion Tactical Squad Mead

Good afternoon,

Been a long time since my last post, slow time for painting.  As you probably know by now, my favourite Chaos Space Marine Legion is the Alpha Legion.  I love the fluff, I love that there is much that is contradictory, and lots of space to fit my version of them into the 40K universe.  They’re also a bugger to paint!  I’ve tried lots of different ways, so my Alpha Legion warband is a bit hit-and-miss in terms of colour schemes.

I decided that I wanted to paint a squad of Alpha Legion that hadn’t yet been touched by chaos.  The Alpha Legion never went to the Eye Of Chaos, they have maintained at least one warband in realspace for ten thousand years, recruiting secretly across the years.

As usual all the figures are second hand, reclaimed marines from ebay.  I’ve stripped and rebuilt where I can but a couple remain in odd poses!  It’s all part of the fun for me to try and salvage them.  Most of these are 00s plastic marines but there is a single RTB01 marine and an early 90s metal Devastator there for Oldhammer goodness.

Loads of things all at once.

2nd Company, 2nd ed, cultists, devastators, Exo Armour, Orks, Painboy, Rogue Trader, Space Crusade, Space Hulk, space wolves, Squat, Steel Guard, Terminator, Werewolf, WH40K

It’s not that I haven’t been doing anything recently, it’s just that I haven’t been completing anything.  But over the weekend I said to myself that I need to do some basing and get the last month’s fabulous minis photographed.  As ever, my paintjob isn’t really the draw, but the wonderful variety of miniatures.

Dev squad with casualty

This is the X Squad of the 2nd Company.  I’ve used a miniatures from a lot of different periods – the Sgt is a Rogue Trader Marine, there’s some 2nd Ed Long Fangs, and lots of different plastic ones including a Dark Vengeance marine.  In the middle of this shot you can see one I’ve modelled as a casualty, knocked of his feet by a shot to the head.

Dev Squad

A group shot.  That RT sculpt really is very odd.  I count it as artificer armour. Does anyone know what the wrist-mounted weapon is?

Squat and Servitor

Here we have a couple of old favourites.  The Painboy I am using as a Servitor – hence the multi melta arm.  The model is possibly one of my favourite ever sculpts and I wanted to use it in my armies despite not collecting Orks.  Except now I’ve decided that I collect Orks too.   The lure of RT Orks became too much to bear!

I love the Exo Armour Squat too.  I haven’t yet found anywhere to shoehorn him into my collection.  I think I’ll make a Rogue Trader warband, or just use him as a chaos champion.  Either way it was a joy to paint.

MkII Term

A mark II terminator suit (with mark 3 arms).  I was intrigued to discover that this was sculpted before the space marine mk VII armour and so that this is the first appearance of this style of helmet.

Term Squad

The rest of the squad.  Note the two Space Hulk terminators hiding at the back here.  Surprisingly tricky to paint, they were.

Werewolf

This werewolf isn’t from Citadel, I don’t think.  I enjoyed painting it just the same.  It doesn’t look that good, more practise on fur needed i reckon.

Cultists

A close up of a Cultist Squad.  You may well recognise a few of these old miniatures.  The leader is a beastman but that photo didn’t come out too well.

Bikers

Some DV bikers.

Veteran

“Scenic base”

Veteran on Tau

No once cares about the Tau, do they?  But a converted 2nd Ed Sergeant might be a bit more interesting.  It looks better in the photo than it does in real life, unfortunately.  But it’s a start.

That’s all from me for now.  On my desk at the moment is a ruin, and another squad of cultists.  See you soon!
