Meet Nigel.  Nigel is a door-to-door blood salesman.  He has been painted for the Oldhammer Forum’s annual painting challenge for 2016 – “Chaos Villagers”.  Nigel has a bestial face mutation, and an extra arm with a beweaponed extremity.  Obviously I used a plastic beastman and glued a tyranid arm onto him!  He’s got a bucket filled with lovely blood and carries a banner advertising his wares.

Quite pleased with this, enjoyed making him.  Won’t leave it so late next year!

So I’ve been a lot more busy than usual.  I was hoping to have some Orcs done (for Orctober), but the only thing I’ve finished recently is this sexy Slaaneshi Minotaur for my ongoing chaos warband.  I had one of these miniatures when I was a lad but I didn’t really ‘get’ it.  Much more innocent times.  It’s a fantastic sculpt.  There’s such a lot to get your head around… bionic leg, jaw, and eye; that studded posing pouch without much in it; the long glove on its sword arm; the huge beefy pecs / boobs; pierced flesh; various cuts and scars across its back… definitely one of my favourite ever miniatures.  I hope that I have done it proud.

It’s been a while since I’ve gotten anything finished (apart from a squad of Space Marine Terminators that I completely forgot about), but I have finally finished a small gang of trolls.  These beauties were mostly sculpted by Drew Williams from the Oldhammer Facebook group.  There’s also a metal Citadel River Troll in there too.  I chose to paint them blue because it’s not a colour I use very often, and I am mostly happy with it.  I think that I should have gone a bit lighter, and I definitely should have remembered to remove the mold lines from one of the heads, but in general I am very happy with these.

“Death From Below!” – Chaos Cultist Mole Mortar

A few years ago, when I first started buying miniatures, I found something interesting in a job lot.  It looked a bit like a Citadel Miniatures Mole Mortar, but upon examination it was actually homemade.  What a good idea, I thought, and then forgot all about it for ages.  Coming across it later I decided that the creator’s work should be honoured.  It’s a good job, if a bit rough around the edges, I’m not sure I could make a better Mole Mortar myself.

The original paintjob was a bit scuffed, but was suitably oldhammer friendly – with “death from below”, a winged bomb, and kill tallies painted on.  I didn’t change anything, just added a bit of shadow, some green lines for the control panel screen, and some rough edge highlights.

As I have lots of Chaos Cultists, it made sense that this was a repurposed Imperial mortar, and anyway, Cultists are always fun to make.  These two are well along the Eightfold Path, mutation stealing away their humanity.  I’ll leave it to the reader to identify the parts used.

Finally I added some fencing to cover up the least convincing part of the Mole Mortar, and to make it look more like an artillery emplacement.  Those two had better hope no Space Marine sees them using that old helmet, or there might be trouble!

I was given Betrayal At Calth for Christmas.  I can’t tell you yet if its any good as a game, but the miniatures are lovely. Whilst they lack the charm and crazy genius of the late 80s Citadel output, these really are beautiful models.   Deciding against painting the contents as Ultramarines vs Word Bearers (as Ultramarines are yuk, and Word Bearers similarly uninspiring), I had to consider other options.  The baddies were an easy choice really – I’ve already got an Alpha Legion army and have given up ever getting a painting technique I am pleased with for those snakey scamps.  I do want to paint a Night Lords warband – in fact, I want to make the warband from the Night Lords series of novels by Aaron Dembski-Bowden.  I was tempted to use these as a place to start, but I want to use these as game pieces in Betrayal At Calth eventually, not chop them up into individuals.  So Death Guard it was.  Nurgle is my homeboy.

The paintjob was loosely based on the Forge Word painting instructions for Death Guard, along with some making-it-up-as-I-went-along.  It’s pretty hit or miss to be honest.  I’ll be changing the recipe slightly for the next Death Guard squad.  Still,  I am happy with this first attempt.

Another step towards a completed Battle Masters set, this is the fantastic Ogre.  The Ogre is the single most powerful model in the game, but his effectiveness is determined by the cards.  I think this is a fabulous model – the scale is out compared to GW’s other Ogres (although I haven’t seen him lined up with the Marauder Giant Ogres), but that doesn’t effect how good it is.  I’ve got a few of these now, and hope to make up an Ogre mob!

This is an example of a miniature that I gave up on.  Huron here was sitting on my painting desk for weeks.  After the initial layers of boltgun metal and gold I was quite happy, i thought it looked good.  But as I painted on the various details I felt that it was getting away from me, and I never recaptured it.  So I did his face (also not happy with that) and based him and decided that I’d come back to it another time!

Despite not being an oldhammer model, I’m still a fan of this model, but painting it… well, it’s a bit too busy!

It’s been a while since I’ve completed anything I’ve liked enough to post here, but I’m happy enough with this.  I think the horse is better than the rider, I enjoyed learning to do the horse.  I’ve never been happy with any horses before but this time I looked at a How To Paint Horses from an old White Dwarf and this is the result.

40k, Alpha Legion, army, chaos, cultists

I am currently working on another unit of cultists.  Over the last couple of years my cultists have become more like Traitor Guard and less like the first 10 miniatures out of the box painted as cultists!  I am increasingly interested in making a proper traitor army using oldhammer models, and less interested in using whatever models are to hand to make a meatshield to go alongside my Alpha Legion marines.  Of course, if I stop making that side of the army, I might as well try a different flavour of Chaos Space Marines too.  And lo! it was decided that my Alpha Legion army was complete

The next twenty or so photos show off this army in its completeness.  I’m pretty pleased with it, but there are some problems.  First of all, and most obviously, quality control.  Included in this army are many of the earliest miniatures I ever painted and so the quality of painting is simply pretty low (even by my standards).  Secondly, I never found an Alpha Legion colour-scheme that I was entirely satisfied with, so there are lots of variations on blue-with-green-and-silver-trim.  Thirdly, the style of the cultists is all over the shop.  Early in my painting hobby I liked the idea of the cultist gangs being a mix of soldiers, civilians, mutants, human chaos champions and magicians, etc etc.  So basically it was a bit of an anything goes, lots of fantasy miniatures with guns.  Later on I decided that this style wasn’t really working and so the cultists became a bit more themed, with only the odd mutation here and there.

Less talk and more pictures.  At 6th ed. prices there’s just over 4000 points here.  HYDRA DOMINATUS!

Battle Masters, chaos, warriors

I recently tracked down a copy of Battle Masters from ebay.  My brother had this back when I was a kid, and we got plenty of games out of it.  I don;t remember painting any of the models back then, so this is all new to me.  The models aren’t great, but are fairly typical of one-piece plastics from the early 90s.  My favourite is the Ogre – I’m going to keep on buying BM Ogres until I’ve got a small regiment of them!

As BM is a good game, I have decided to keep the miniatures as BM playing pieces, which means affixing them to the large green plastic bases.  I’ve painted these to a basic standard (even by my basic standards) but I hope that it’s good enough.   In order to imply that they are Nurgle worshippers I have given then a dull green trim and dark green cloak.
