Last up was this little collection of minis. Mostly Knightmare, with one of Tim Prow’s recent kickstarter as a leader, and there’s a citadel champion of Khorne in there too. As a kid that champion was my avatar in games, it was my favorite mini and I took so much care when painting it, it was probably my best painted mini. It managed to escape the great sell off of 2002 when I cleared out the attic at my mum’s and sold everything I found up there. It often showed up again over the next few years, and I thought it lived at the bottom of a coin jar. It disappeared during the dark years, 2009-10, when my life and mental health went utterly bugfuck, like a lot of my possessions, and sadly has never been seen again. Where did you go to, my dog-faced darling? A few years ago I picked it up on ebay from Brigend Steve and took great delight in painting him to go into this team. Actually I really enjoyed all of this lot. Knightmare’s beastmen mutants are such lovely sculpts, and Tim Prow’s snake-wizard-lady makes a great Slaaneshi champion.

That’s it for now. Inspired by this chaotic bunch I am working on a some more troops for a 40k chaos army, hopefully it won’t be too long!

My final orktober offering is an oldhammer-newhammer combi. When the Speed Freeks game came out a few years ago I fell in love with the ork vehicles inside but I couldn’t afford the whole box. Later I picked up this Boomdakka Snazzwagon, which is a lovely kit, feels very old school, full of orky goodness. It could easily pass for a battlewagon in my opinion, especially against the tiny metal vehicles of old. Orks can buy heavy weapons to mount on battlewagons, so the weapon roll out here is whatever i roll on those lovely charts (heavy bolter, heavy plasma gun, missile launcher). Speed Freekz also get access to cheap vehicles, so I added a warbuggy and wartrak (skorcha). Poor tiny vehicles! The skorcha really needs a (full size) modern kit, by the way GW, hint hint.

Final completed work for now, this little lot is another attempt to play with Constrast paints, again with mixed results. Commissar Raine is firmly newhammer, released within the last year or so. I thought it was a great sculpt, full of life and hyper-realistic despite being perfectly in-universe. When I opened the box I was surprised and disappointed. If I hadn’t received this item directly from GW Mail Order I would have thought it was a recast. The detailing is lost, the resin feels flimsy, the pieces didn’t fit together very well. I have only positive experience of GW’s resin before this, and if the internet hadn’t been full of people making similar complaints I would have complained myself. I’ve made the best of it though, and generally I am happy with Severina. Sanctioned Psyker Sturm I am not so happy with. I just could not get his eyes right – I have so many problems with painting eyes, I really am not that good at the finework. I tried to paint one eye glowing with a green flame to indicate psychic doings, whether this makes it even more of a mess I don’t think I am qualified to say. Still, practice makes perfect they say, maybe next time I’ll be a bit better.

The non-GW minis in the squad are two troopers from a Bad Squiddo kickstarter. Nice minis, one of them has a really badly sculpted hand though. Hands are hard and plenty of early GW minis have similar problems. There is also Oleg, who has fallen through a fart in space-time from the Advance on Berlin and landed in a massed battle somewhere in the 41st Millenium. He is fairly clear on his orders though, do whatever the nearest commissar tells you to do, and so he has slid nicely from our dystopian past into our dystopian far future. His hands were well sculpted but his face is a mess that I lacked the skill to do anything with. Let’s pretend he earned the right to carry the banner by single-handedly knocking out a Nazi flamethrower team despite receiving serious burns. That’ll do!

Finally a handful of metal and plastic Imperial Guard that didn’t require much work, Contrast paints really good for simple paint jobs!

Ancient Binahus, Rogue Trader dreadnought

Next out of the leadpile is a rebuilt Rogue Trader dreadnought.  I do like these models, whether long or short of leg they really feel like an archaic machine.  The face on the sarcophagus is great, giving a sense of the inhuman and megalithic!  It feels like quite a dramatic mini, considering how slab-like and immovable the sculpt is.  That’s the sign of a good sculptor, I think.  You can imagine this pulverising its way through a battleline, small arms fire bouncing off it and power-fists laying low anyone who came near! This particular one has been rebuilt.  The left side (facing the dread) has had the circular shoulder piece replaced by green stuff as it was missing.  One of the bolters was also missing and has been replaced with a standard bolter.  Due to the lack of detail this is a challenging mini to paint, and I think I did OK considering how average my painting skills are.

Merdigera the Spawn

Merdigera started walking the eightfold path as a wizard’s apprentice who couldn’t wait to learn more.  Leaving his master behind he wandered into the Wastes Of Chaos in search of knowledge and magical powers.  At first all went well, and the gifts of Tzeentch turned him into something more than a man.  But like most chaos worshippers, he faltered, unable to master the winds of magic in such a way as to please his malignant god.  So it was that he ended up less than human, a jumbled twist of flesh dragged around by his former warband as a mascot. Let that be today’s lesson!

Another quick update, from big marines to littler marines.  The old RTB01s look piddly next to many of the new miniatures.  I have to say that while I am not wedded to any particular scale I think that some of the modern miniatures are too big.  I am not so much thinking of the warmachines, the super heavies and all that, but instead of the AoS giant figures, Nagash, for example, or the Verminlords.   Too much going on, too big compared to the other models… and that’s quite apart from the price.  Magnus and Mortarian are lovely miniatures, but £80+ is too much for me.  Of course, the quality of workmanship is completely different, there’s no denying that.  The RTB01s were the best they could do at the time and are really quite rubbish compared to the modern stuff but they were my childhood rubbish and that’s that!

This squad is a mixed batch of Oldhammer marines; you can tell these were hand sculpted, but that just makes them better!

Big Sal’s Dakkagurlz – Human Mercenary mob / Necromunda gang

One of the lesser-remembered Ork mobz from the Rogue Trader period was the Human Mercenary mob.  I am not sure I ever saw one painted or used.  When I pulled an old metal Escher ganger out of the lead-pile I knew what I needed to do.  With the release of Shadow War Armageddon getting everyone hot for Necromunda action, I thought that they could double as a Necromunda gang, should I ever decide to play it….

The galaxy is a big place.  Beyond the reaches of the Imperium are millions of Ork-held star systems.  Plenty of humans live in these systems.  Some are slaves toiling in Ork factories, others are (relatively) free, ignored as long as a massive tithe of weapons and vehicles are forthcoming (and the Orks have got better enemies to fight, of course).  Some of these humans are feral or semi-feral, living lives not much different the Orks themselves.  Some of them even seem to think that they are Orks, much to the amusement of Orks themselves, who reckon that these humans are cracked.  Nevertheless, when the Orks go off to Waaagh sometimes they bring some of these Kultured humans with them (normally as light entertainment or cannon-fodder); sometimes the humans come along anyway and just turn up, shouting in pidgin-Orkish and shooting at the same things.  Big Sal’s Dakkagurlz is one of those mobz….

Now this was a fun project!  The list in Freebooterz is for a Mek, a Dok, and a Dread.  I added another Dread (because I had 2), and seeing as i wanted to use the Bionik Dok mini I took a 3 rolls on the bionik bitz chart, rolling telescopic legs, stainless steel teef, and an extra set of bionik arms with a kustom melta.  For the Dreads I rolled to see how many modifications they got.  I ended up with the first having an extra autocannon, kustom force field and speakers.  The second though, whew!  I ended up with a kustom d-cannon, squig-injection, extra autocannon, speakers, kustom ff, and a scorcher turret…  In the end I couldn’t fit the speakers on it, but I think i’ve got the rest right.  The red one is Da Nipper, and the yellow one is called Hot Lips.  Enjoy!
