Imperial Space Marines, Space Crusade, Thousand Sons, WH40K 2nd Edition

I was sorting out my painting miniatures recently, following our house move. Clearing out the old and tidying up the new, that sort of thing. I was putting all the minis from the various games, assessing what i had completed and what I hadn’t so that if a visitor expressed a desire to play e.g. Burning of Prospero, I knew whether the minis were painted or not and if so, where they were. It turns out that, either by forgotten design or a common-or-garden brain fart, I had painted all the Iron Armour marines as Space Wolves. That wasn’t so bright, I needed a squad of Thousand Sons or the game would be wrong! I lacked a spare squard of Iron Armour or similar 30K miniatures and didn’t want to buy a set as I have more marines knocking around than I will ever get round to painting (and I sold off a big box recently too!). Instead I fished out some ‘old’ marines, making a squad of marines from the Imperial Space Marines, Space Crusade, and 2nd Edition box set (with a Tactical Space Marine as a sergeant). I gave them a random set of weapons to imply that this is a rag-tag collection fighting a guerrila war in the ashes of their home using whatever weapons they can find. Painted them as quickly and as roughly as I could (maybe contrast paints will make this sort of thing even easier). Nice work. Now does anyone want a game of Burning of Prospero?

Gellerpox Infected, Kill Team Rogue Trader, mutants, nurgle

Hello again everyone, and welcome to another installation of Bastard Fat-hands Difficult Modern Painting! This month, the Gellerpox Infected are very difficult to paint. I actually got the Kill Team boxset because I wanted the Rogue Trader and entourage, but I painted the Gellerpox gang first because they fit with the Death Guard from Dark Imperium. I am happiest with the Nightmare Hulks, which were a lot of fun to paint. I am least happy with Vulgror, I struggled with necrotised/undead/zombie dark skin. Obv. I could have painted him differently, but I like to try out new things. The VoxShamblers were tricky, in the same way that the very-similar PoxWalkers were tricky. I tried to give them three different skin tones here, but it came out very samey. The sculpting is wonderful though, I love most the hospital-trolley leg club, that really tells a story.

I don’t get a lot of painting done these days. Busy times. We have a special needs dog now, who seems to take up a lot of my time. But twenty minutes here and there, the odd hour now and again, it all adds up to slow work.

This gang were put together on a theme – that theme being Big! It gave me an apportunity to paint a load of classic miniatures and a modern masterpiece too. This is quite a flexible gang, I could use it in a game of Rogue Trader on its own, or I could use them as part of an Ork army. Blood Axes are allowed ripper gun armed Ogryns, but all others are only allowed Ogryns armed with hand-weapons. I could also integrate my other Beastman space pirate gang into this one quite easily. There are also rules for a Big Mutant squad for chaos armies in (I think) Codex Eye of Terror…

Aside: I played my first game of 40K as an adult the other week. It was fun, but my Primaris Marines fell to a Necron force. The main thing I learned is that with Necrons you should shoot everything at a single squad until it is destroyed, then repeat until you or they are all dead. You mustn’t let any Necrons survive or the squad will be back soon!

On with the Big Lads… once again, apologies for the quality of the photos, I haven’t gotten around to making a different backdrop yet, but I will!

Hitchin’ a ride, ride, ride… hitchin’ a (Razorback) ride!

Its been a long eight weeks or more since I moved house again. A very busy eight weeks in which I have hardly managed to do any painting at all. But fortunately the Steel Guard paint-scheme is very forgiving, so here’s a Razorback in the colours of the 7th Company. Really this was an excuse to paint the rider, Lieutenant Ryen, as he hops a ride. I don’t think that modern GW does miniatures like this one anymore – he’s never been a gaming model, always just a spot of character sitting on a rhino chassis somewhere. I love his expression, chewing on a cigar, never mind that his pauldron (is that the shoulder pads?) is missing. I’ve also tried to paint the gunner as a techmarine – once upon a time all drivers and gunners were techmarines I think – well, they are in the Steel Guard! Happy Eggmas to all my readers, think of us sad diabetics when you’re guzzling your chocolate eggs!

Finishing off the my Dark Imperium boxset, this Blightdrone. After the trouble I had painting the Death Guard from that set I put off painting the Blightdrone because I couldn’t face more failure. There is so much lovely detail on the Nurgle minis but my painting skills are not really up to it. I hope that it doesn’t put kids off – I know that it finding things hard used to put me off things, but I wasn’t raised in an environment that rewarded persistence. However I am pleased with how this has come out. It took a long time, and its not Golden Demon standard, but I’ve learned from the earlier DG and applied that learning and I am quite pleased. So now I have a small Death Guard army, just like I wanted way back before the DG were relauched. Being a sucker for punishment I have built the Gellerpox Mutants from the Kill Team Rogue Trader boxset to go alongside. You’ll get to see them in however many months! I lke the Blightdrone, its basically a really angry clam! I don’t eat molluscs, but I am reliably informed that they are basically delivery systems for getting heavy metal pollution from the seas into human beings, which is delightfully nurglish.

I’ve also included a picture of my ‘lightbox’ set up, as someone was grumbling about the quality of my photos! As you can see, I’ve got TWO daylight lamps and my shots are still quite dark, so if anyone has any suggestions for getting better shots with that set-up, please let me know. I’m a bit of a technophobe and have not brain so maybe I am missing something obvious!

Captain Poythines and Tactical Squad Nawab, Steel Guard 6th Company

Another Steel Guard squad, plus another Captain for the Command Team. I’ve painted one of the Space Wolf Captain minis before, for the Captain of the 3rd Company. That time I experimented with non-metallic metals, attempting a gold armoured marine. It wasn’t especially a success, though I might try again sometime now I’ve had a few more years practice. I’ve been trying to clear my leadpile recently, having moved countries to glorious Cymru and having therefore to have to confront the sheer piles of stuff I own. I’ve sold off all the mid-period miniatures, leaving only the cool old stuff and some of the brand spanking new sweet miniatures the GW workshops are cranking out these days. Thus this squad is all classic minis from the days of Rogue Trader and 2nd Edition, and I think it looks before it, don’t you?

  • That lovely wolf-headed mini
  • Missile launcher and plasma gunners

Chaos Dwarf daemon-machines!

What a lovely experience it was, painting this little warband of Chaos Dwarfs. The wonderful bumcannon monster is by Old School Miniatures, in homage of course to the legendary limited release bumcannon of yore. The tenderiser is mostly the original, though missing its shield and the lower half of the daemon pushing it. I replaced that with an old plastic boar. The chap with the lobster arm is from Hasslefree, whose sculpt is clearly based on the dwarf Yorri from an illustration in (I think) Ignorant Armies.

This was a great little project and one I really enjoyed. I hope you like them as much as I do.

Big Mek Gorrunt’s Gang – Outcast Retinue

The Freebooterz book is an amazing thing. It allows you to build almost any Ork army you want. All you need to do is pick a Warboss and his retinue, and a bigmob of at least ten Orks, then after that Freebooterz is your guide for making a fantastic army using whatever takes your fancy. The Outcast Retinue mob allows you to use a different clan to your main clan and still take whatever special rules that second clan has. Now, I haven’t got a main clan yet (though I have Goff and Bad Moonz clan Orks), so an Outcast Retinue is a pretty pointless thing to have. Still, the dice rolls were in, and an Outcast Retinue it was. I then rolled for a clan and it was Evil Sunz. But I’ve just finished a red, vehicle-based mob! An Evil Sunz Retinue offers you two Meks (and their associated odddbitz), plus cheap vehicles. But we’re not going to do that! This Retinue is missing all the things that make it an Evil Sunz Retinue! Mostly, this is because almost all my minis were already packed for my house move. One day I’ll add a load of vehicles to it, I’ve already bought one of the cool new Ork vehicles (did I say this last time, I love the new Ork vehicles, but I hate the modern Ork minis and flufff), and I will add a couple of tanks or something. The looted rhino (counts as a battlewagon) came in a lot I bought a few years ago and is a rough and ready conversion that didn’t need a lot of messing with. I cleaned up the paint job, added a few more bitz and some weathering and hoped that covered up the worst of it. The story behind this retinue is that a telly-porta accident seperated them from the rest of the clan, leaving the warboss, the boyz, the wagons, the runtz, and all the perks of kultur somewhere entirely different to the retinue. Following a period of adjustment, during which Big Mek Gorrunt ascerted his domination through a judicious use of a giant power klaw, they are now back and looking for a scrap. As any Ork knows, a wagon and a bike aren’t enough speed for Evil Sunz, they need more vehicles and they’re willing to fight for them!

Another completed box set here.  When I got back into painting miniatures, there were just three games and everyone was crying out for new games but GW were like, you’ll have three and like it.  When this was released we all got excited and expected it to be a one-off buy since them there have been more boxed games than I can count, certainly more than I can paint.  So I stopped buying them, realising that my interests were too wide and my painting not quick enough.  So I let the Warhammer Quest sets pass me by despite them being lovely.  I’ve ignored Age of Sigmar, despite some of the minis being great.  I bought the Dark Imperium last year mind, and am still working on it.. How can a person paint so much?  But this year has seen so many great box sets that I have had to ask for GW vouchers for Christmas… Kill Team Rogue Trader set, Speed Freeks, and Blackstone Fortress all call to me.  TOO MUCH HOBBY!?!?!?!1111

So yeah the assassins are lovely minis, and the chaos guys are a pleasure to paint.  I’ve modified the callidus a bit because the hair was ridiculous even by the standards of the 41st millenium.  I couldn’t let it stand.

Ancient Binahus, Rogue Trader dreadnought

Next out of the leadpile is a rebuilt Rogue Trader dreadnought.  I do like these models, whether long or short of leg they really feel like an archaic machine.  The face on the sarcophagus is great, giving a sense of the inhuman and megalithic!  It feels like quite a dramatic mini, considering how slab-like and immovable the sculpt is.  That’s the sign of a good sculptor, I think.  You can imagine this pulverising its way through a battleline, small arms fire bouncing off it and power-fists laying low anyone who came near! This particular one has been rebuilt.  The left side (facing the dread) has had the circular shoulder piece replaced by green stuff as it was missing.  One of the bolters was also missing and has been replaced with a standard bolter.  Due to the lack of detail this is a challenging mini to paint, and I think I did OK considering how average my painting skills are.
