I bought this off ebay the other day and thought I’d share a few pics with you.  This is, of course, the plastic Space Ork boxset.  My ostensible reason for buying it was that it had lots of half used sprues and I’m always on the look-out for old Ork arms and weapons at a reasonable price!    But the lure of the cardboard box helped too.  I think I bought a few of these when I was a kid.  Much better value than the lead miniatures, though to my adult mind the plastics aren’t anywhere near as good.  I’m painting a couple at the moment and they’re not as fun to paint.  Because they’re not as detailed they’re actually more challenging to paint well (especially for someone like me whose still an enthusiastic amateur).  Still, they were dead cheap and enabled you to bulk out your squads really well.  they contained more weapons and arms than you needed so you had spares for your bits box, and the sprues were full of pouches, grenades, armour, spades, binoculars and all sorts of things that you didn’t really use but were considered essential to the full experience.  Enjoy the pics of the packaging! The contents, painted. This little guy is a Chaos Thug that I was sent to rebuild by a nice chap on the Oldhammer forum.  When I received him, he was an arm and a leg down, and his sword was long-gone too.  Someone had started the process of chopping off his other leg as well.  So I filled the saw-marks in his thighs with green stuff, then raided my bits boxes for replacement parts.  For each limb I laid out a selection of suitable parts, then put the decision into the hands of the chaos gods and rolled a dice to see what he ended up with.  So his leg is from a plastic chaos space marine, his arm is a plastic zombie arm, and the sword blade i think is from a plastic skaven.  I gave him the best paint job I could – it’s hardly golden demon standard but I’m quite pleased with it.  I think the skin tone blending is a bit too subtle though.

Right, finished basing this squad this evening.  I’m not sure how successful this has been.  I’ve included WHFB and LOTR figures in this Cultists Squad, and tried to draw the styles together through a uniform colour scheme and spot colours.  I think it’s OK, though the drummer with the plumed hat might be a step too far.  Still, I think that a group of cultists during a Chaos Uprising could be mixed up, from all backgrounds and social classes and areas of the planet and with differing dress styles.  Things I like about this.  I love the two old models particularly.  The old plastic guards are favourites of mine, and the female guard model is great.  I like her mullet!  I liked painting a crude Alpha Legion hydra on the drum.  I like to think that these cultists are utterly deluded.  They think they’re part of the gang, but they’re nothing but fodder, useful idiots.  I like the harem pants wearing LOTR guy who looks like Lenin – I gave him a plastic Necromunda arm which I think workds.   I’m getting better at green fatigues and caucasian skin painting.    Still no good at eyes or hair!

I’ve finally gotten around to basing this lad.  I have no doubt that you’ll recognise the HeroQuest gargoyle.  I loved HeroQuest.  It was my first experience of miniatures and table-top games.  What I liked about it initially was that it brought Fighting Fantasy books to life.  I didn’t know at the time about Games Workshop and the connections between FF and GW.  I bought more models from a local games shop, long closed, so that I could have different monsters in my games.  In short order I discovered White Dwarf, Space Crusade, Rogue Trader, and Warhammer.

So the gargoyle was the centre of the dungeon, the big monster.  As a model he’s basically a Khorne Bloodthirster.  I think the design team couldn’t be bothered to come up with an entirely new design tbh.  I’ve painted mine as a Champion Of Khorne suitable for any Chaos Army.  I’m generally pleased with all of it except the damn wings.  Not too sure about the snow base either. Or the sword… or…

Having finished painting a load of stuff yesterday (pics to follow), I’ve reached into The Pit (aka The Big Box Of Models)  to see what happens next.  An overpainted Ork Freeboota Kaptain?  Into the dettol with you!  A plastic marine with a sword?  Good for me!  This means that the next painting job will be a Space Marine Assault Squad.  I root through the box until I’ve got ten marines that have assault weapons or no weapons at all.  Below is a picture of all ten in their beginning states.  A couple will immediately join the Ork in the dettol though!

As you can tell, I buy my miniatures from ebay!  I love poking through a box of old miniatures, seeing what gems are there or looking at other people’s wild conversions.  Because I want a whole chapter of Space Marines one day there’s not really any other way of doing it.

In this batch there are 6 modern plastic multipart marines, 1 RTB01 marine, a metal death company marine, a Space Crusade captain (with a home-made paper cloak that i think i will keep), and an RT Dark Angels Marine Captain.  You’ll next see these guys when I’m done painting them!

I like the mix and match nature of having different eras of marine in the same squad.  I like the idea that sporadic rearming, damage to armour, deaths and promotions etc mean that squad armouring is in regular flux and therefore it is the squad markings and paintjobs that indicate a squad, not the armour mark or styles.  Also, because the Steel Guard don’t have a homeworld and recruit as they go, there will be marines from dozens of different cultures within them, hence a variety of styles of personalisation.  Let’s hope they’re not too individualistic though, I can’t imagine the Inquisition would have anything good to say about that….

So you buy piles of stuff on ebay but there’s things you’re not really interested in – LOTR miniatures, mid / late period fantasy troops etc.  Nobody wants to swap them for anything good, they’re not really worth anything, and you’ve got more than you can imagine ever needing for bitz.  My solution has been to band them together as Mutant Gangs.  Alpha Legion agents travel the galaxy, seeding corruption and rebellion on every planet they can.  As we know from Necromunda, mutants lurk in the underhive, angry and bloodthirsty, just waiting for the spark of revolution to be lit…. Or perhaps these are the scum that lurk in Chaos Barges, pouring forth in their millions during Chaos attacks, each bullet that ends their miserable life another bullet that can’t be used against Chaos Marines or daemons…

Back Row: WHFB Skink – LOTR Orc Halbardier – LOTR Goblin – Genestealer Hybrid – WHFB Skink

Front Row: LOTR Orc – Empire soldier (converted) – Necromunda Ratskin – Skaven / Imperial Guard converstion – WHFB Beastman

I’ve tried to include some narrative touches – for example the front row guy with the axe also has a Chaos Marine bolter, but there’s no clip in the bolter.  He’s just showing off something he found but can’t use.  Of course, if he’s lucky he’ll die before he gets found by a real Chaos Marine!  Likewise, of course, the presence of the hybrid.  Masquerading as a mutant during a chaos uprising might be a perfect place to hide until you can breed and pass on the ‘Stealer genes.

Just finished basing this guy.  Oldhammerers will recognise the model as a Space Wolves Captain from about 1990.  It’s a beautiful model, and one that I felt deserved a special paint job (by my wonky standards, obv).  So I decided that I’d use the non-metallic gold painting instructions by Neil Hodgson in White Dwarf 197.  Whilst I don’t think its turned out too badly at all, it’s not gold, is it?  Still, it’s a paint technique I’ve never tried before, the next one will be better.

WD197 has loads of painting techniques in it, and a Modelling Workshop article on making different types of hedges.  So at some point in the near future I’ll show pictures of three or four different types of home-made hedge.   If that doesn’t give you a warm glow of trepidation then you’re dead inside 😀

So anyway, without any further ado, may I present Captain Niqal Vosuqabad, the Steel Wolf!

40k, chaos, new old stuff, oldhammer, slaves to darkness

Look what arrived in the post today!  Whilst I’ve read a pdf copy of Lost And The Damned fairly recently, I’ve not read Slaves To Darkness since I was a young ‘un and borrowed a copy from James Barker.  James was an only child, so he had lots of expensive things like Games Workshop books and the latest Amiga computer games.  Stuff that povos like me could only dream of!  It was a fascinating read and I wished I had my own copy.  I can completely understand why these books in particular have stood the test of time and captivate adults 20 years or more after they were first published.

This will be my bedtime reading for a few days I reckon.  I can imagine that it won’t be long before I’m adding Chaos Warbands to the list of armies I am painting [currently standing at: Steel Guard Imperial Space Marine Chapter; Alpha Legion warband; Ork Freeboota Army].

I CAN'T WAIT TO GET INTO IT!

Squad Arida – Second Company, IX Squad

2nd Company, devastators, IX Squad, oldhammer, Rogue Trader, Space Crusade, Steel Guard

Just based these today so I thought I’d take a picture.  Obviously this is a Devastator Squad.  This is about the limit of my painting skills thus far.  I’m pretty pleased with them, even though I know that not a great painter.  One of the best things, for me, about this hobby, is getting better.  18 months ago, when I first picked up a paintbrush after 20 years away, I was rubbish.  And since then I’ve gotten better, slowly yes, but every now and again I look at what I’ve painted and realise it’s better than I could have done a few months ago.

I’ve painted a few squads of my homebrew Marine chapter so far.  The chapter are called the Steel Guard, and the colours of grey, red, and gold, are supposed to be vaguely soviet in styling.  I’m thinking that I’m going to use a lighter grey next time, see how that goes.

So this squad is a nice mix of old and new.  I love the Rogue Trader Marine that I’m using as the Veteran Sergeant.  There’s also a metal Death Company Marine (with the power fist) and I’ve painted the blood drops gold, to tie in with the rest of the Steel Guard livery.  These are the Emperor’s Tears, awarded to Steel Guard marines for exceptional valour during defeat!  You’ll also notice that all four heavy weapons Marines are from Space Crusade.  I’ve long had a soft spot for Space Crusade, and I think the molds are wonderful.

Enjoy!

40k, chaos, cultists, imperial guard, oldhammer

Good evening and welcome to my Painting & Modelling blog.  Rather than faff around with a proper introduction I think I’ll just dive straight in by picturing what I’ve got on my painting table right now.

This bunch are part of my ongoing 40k Alpha Legion & Cultist army.  This is a Chaos Cultist Squad.  The Dark Vengeance chap in the middle is their squad leader.  For Oldhammer fans, there’s an early metal guards(wo)man in the front row, and a plastic Imperial Guardsman too.  The rest of the cultists are various ‘human’ figures from across different ranges.  I like to use colours to tie in the cultists, assuming that they’ll be people from all parts of society getting tooled up and going off to fight for their dark masters.  This lot are about 50% complete and you’ll see them again when they’re done!
